In 2026 we started a new adventure in the conservation of bats in the V4 region - see description of the project here. In contrast to previous projects, here we focused on bat species which prefer a warm climate (the Mediterranean area is the centre of their distribution). Three Horseshoe bat species (Rhinolophus ferrumequinum, R. euryale and R. hipposideros), Schreibers' Bent-winged Bat (Miniopterus schreibersii) and Lesser Mouse-eared Bat (Myotis blythii) are the key species. New data are needed for actual conservation measures.
We selected four areas with a warm climate along the Danube and Morava rivers: Pálava, Devínska Kobyla, Burda and Visegrad mountains. In spring we started recording bat echolocation signals using specialized recorders – Audiomoth. We installed four recorders in each area, in open or semi-open locations. We would like to figure out if these sites have potential for these species. First results will be known before the project end. We are very curious if there are big differences among study areas.

Our lecturers also started education for children focused on bat ecology and biology. It is our regular activity (famous from previous projects) which enjoys great success among children. The rest of the activities will start in June – preparing an exhibition about bats and field excursions for the public.
